The main industry in Door County is tourism. New businesses are opening all the time, and they all need workers. Back in the day, students came up to work for the summer, but that source of help began to dry up, so businesses in Door County turned to other nations. They get J-1 students from other countries to come and work. The employers offer employee housing and often bicycles so that the students can get to and from work and around town.

Mark left on our anniversary :(
Mark left yesterday morning to go to a BACA conference in Florida. If you’re not sure what BACA is, Mark asked me to include a link in this blog to the video that got him interested in joining BACA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuF3WqJUMKc.

Tomorrow, June 13th, is Mark’s and my 13th wedding anniversary. Mark is leaving in the morning to go to Florida for a BACA conference and will be gone for a week and a half, so we had to celebrate today along with other things he had to prepare for leaving.

One or two of you have mentioned that you’ve missed me writing this month. We’ve been trying to get Ashton through the Freshman year of high school. Ashton was way behind when we first picked Ashton up, but we pushed Ashton to catch up and Friday was the last day to turn assignments in. We’re just waiting to see the report card now, but we know that Ashton will be passing almost all of the classes, hopefully with a good margin.

Several months ago, I wrote about joining The Longest Day fundraiser to help fight Alzheimer’s. “The Longest Day is the day with the most light — the summer solstice. On June 20, thousands of participants from across the world come together to fight the darkness of Alzheimer’s through an activity of their choice. Together, they use their creativity and passion to raise funds and awareness for the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.”* Here is what I’ll be doing to honor a woman named Wanda and my Aunt Marg who are both suffering from dementia…

We have been so busy since we’ve been home – trying to move back into the house, getting Ashton set up in our RV, and getting all the stuff we moved back into the house put away – that I haven’t had much time to write, so this will just be a quick message.
Continue readingFrom home
I’m pooped! We got home and immediately had to move out of the RV so that there is room for Ashton to put clothes and food away. So much to do; so little time! That’s all for tonight.
From La Crosse, WI
Stay tuned until the end for the surprise I promised last night!
Continue readingFrom Liberty, MO
I spent nearly an hour beforehand trying to find a place for us to stop for the night. We crossed into Missouri and I missed the state border sign. I was still fretting and stewing online when Mark happened to see a Cracker Barrel restaurant along the edge of the highway. He had heard that they allow overnight camping, so we pulled in and found they have designated parking spaces for RVs and buses behind their restaurant. We asked and they don’t have any particular restrictions. We got parked and went in to have a nice dinner. Mark says we may go in for breakfast too!
Continue readingFrom Meade, KS
We went through four states today: New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas! We were aiming to stop in Liberal, Kansas right on the border of Oklahoma and Kansas, but there was “no room in the inn,” so to speak. Some of you may remember that we stopped in Liberal two or three years ago and visited Dorothy Gale’s house (Wizard of Oz). Since neither of the RV parks there had room for us, we went another 40 miles to Meade of the Dalton Gang Hideout fame. Good thing the Dalton’s never came to Dorothy’s house!
