Before we left home, I washed some of our laundry, but by today, we were out of some things, so that’s why we decided to stay at the Lancaster Event Center here in Lincoln, Nebraska another day and take showers and do all of our laundry. We had heard that they have free laundry here. You can’t beat that on the road!

From Sherrill, IA
I love the name of this town, although it’s spelled a little differently from Sherill’s name. This is the name Mom derived Sherill’s name spelling from. Sherrill is located due north of Dubuque by a few miles and is situated right on the Mississippi River. We saw the reflection of the water in our headlights as we pulled in. Otherwise, it was completely dark outside!

We moved into our RV earlier this week, but we’re still sitting in our driveway. We discovered last year that by moving into the RV early, if we think of something we wanted to take with us, we only have to go into the house to get it.

I wasn’t sure when my last day at the Noble House for this season would be, but my boss told me at the end of my shift today that the museum will be closed next weekend. I ended the season with a bang!

In the spring, the flowerbed in front of my house always starts out with shy violets and lily of the valley. By fall, it is completely overrun with everything from ferns and goldenrod to Queen Ann’s lace and a sort of locust tree (Robinia hispida) we can’t seem to get rid of. At the Welcome Center today, my boss brought me a bag of apples that someone had picked off their tree. Most of them were wormy or bruised, but I cut the bad parts out and made a big batch of applesauce. I squeezed lemon into it and didn’t add any sugar. Mark and I like tart things and we each had a small bowl of it while it was still hot. It was so good!

My last post was about Ashton applying for a job in Fish Creek. A whole series of events have happened since then.

The main industry in Door County is tourism. New businesses are opening all the time, and they all need workers. Back in the day, students came up to work for the summer, but that source of help began to dry up, so businesses in Door County turned to other nations. They get J-1 students from other countries to come and work. The employers offer employee housing and often bicycles so that the students can get to and from work and around town.

Tomorrow, June 13th, is Mark’s and my 13th wedding anniversary. Mark is leaving in the morning to go to Florida for a BACA conference and will be gone for a week and a half, so we had to celebrate today along with other things he had to prepare for leaving.
