One problem with having to be somewhere at a certain time is that you don’t have time to really stop for pictures. Mark and I had a long push today to make it for the 2nd Annual NRVIA Conference which starts tomorrow. Actually, tomorrow is a training for me and the conference itself starts on Saturday. At least we get to stay in one place for a few nights, which is lovely. It means we get to take things out of the sinks and actually use them and bump out both slide outs so that the RV feels more spacious again. Continue reading
From Granite City, IL
This morning was the highlight of the whole day. We met a second cousin of mine, Andrea Brim, for breakfast. She suggested we meet at the restaurant on the top floor of IKEA. I hadn’t realized they had restaurants in IKEA stores, but it was a cafeteria style place where you could buy a plate full of breakfast for $1! Continue reading
From Elgin, IL
We got a really late start today, plus the fact that we needed to stop for groceries in Sturgeon Bay, so we entered Illinois in the dark. We got to the campground we were hoping to stay in and at first we saw a closed sign and were afraid we were too late. Fortunately we found out that only the Burnidge Forest Preserve was closed but the campground was still open. We were so grateful! Continue reading
Last day on the job
The last campers pulled out (supposedly) by noon today and then it was time to do closing procedures. The part Mark and I played in it was to bring all the soap and shampoo dispensers and cleaners up to the main building to empty them into bottles so they won’t freeze this winter. Then we washed the dispensers out and put all the used rags through the washer and drier. We emptied the garbages, turned off the heat and locked the doors. What a joy to be done for this season! Final weekend in Door County
I was sick for a week with the “company cold” (the staff has been passing it around), and this week Mark got it. We’ve been working on trying to get packed up to leave and campers keep coming and won’t be leaving till the day before we do, so things have been busy. Still, I’ve taken some time the last couple days to do some fun things while Mark had to stay home nursing his cold. Continue reading
Public restroom etiquette
As our job here winds down and we anticipate cleaning bathrooms in Florida this winter, I thought I’d pass on some sage advice about public restroom etiquette. Years ago as a young wife and mother, I went to a series of Christian Homemaker classes led by a woman named Bobbi Hassman. I will never forget her recruiting us into the Public Restroom Beautification Program. She said we should always leave a public restroom looking neater than we found it and I have always tried to do that…pick up a paper towel from the floor, wipe off the countertop, etc. Here are some tips from my experience this summer: Continue reading
Odds and ends
I was told tonight that I need to post a new blog entry. I don’t have anything earthshaking to report, but here’s what’s been going on and why my posts have been a bit more sparse lately: Continue reading
Special night
Tonight I witnessed something that hasn’t happened since 1982 and won’t happen again until 2033. I think it’s being called a super blood moon eclipse. It’s the fourth in a lunar tetrad which means that six months ago and six months before and six months before that we had lunar eclipses. In the 21st century there will be eight lunar tetrads. The last time earth got to see that many lunar tetrads was in the ninth century. It is a super moon, meaning that because it is closest to the earth this month, it looks extra big. It is a blood moon, meaning it was a total lunar eclipse, which is what gives it a reddish color. And it’s also a harvest moon because it is the full moon closest to the autumn equinox. What a night! Persecuted Christians
Mark says I bury my head in the sand when it comes to the news, and he’s probably right. I quit watching the news and reading newspapers a long time ago because the news just brought me down. I can be a lot more optimistic when I just keep track of what’s going on around me. However, there are certain news stories that get through my defenses and I find them very distressing; I don’t know how to deal with them. Continue reading
Camping World is here
Camping World has come to Wagon Trail Campground for several days. We had forgotten this was happening and this evening Mark and I were in our RV when we started hearing voices. Then we heard music and I said to Mark, “It sounds like there’s a television on near us.” We finally realized it was the evening of entertainment on Camping World’s agenda, so I took my camera and headed up to check it out. Continue reading
