Guest blog: John Glionna

Those of you who have been following my blog for a while may remember how upset I was about a year ago when a reporter from Harpers classified Workampers as senior citizens who have to work to survive and get taken advantage of by their employers.  Another reporter compared Workampers to the Joad family from Grapes of Wrath or to Woody Guthrie.  A rash of reporters began contacting Workamper News asking for people to interview so I offered to be one of those people.  Several months ago I was contacted by John Glionna of the LA Times who, at the time, was looking for a modern migrant worker-type story and I told him if he wanted to interview me he had to tell the story like it is.  He agreed to interview Mark and I and two other Workampers and do our stories justice, so this weekend he and a photographer from the LA Times, Francine Orr, are here following us around and asking us all sorts of questions about our lifestyle.  I believe he’ll write a good story. I’ve asked him to do a guest blog: telling a little about himself, explaining his story idea and what he’s hoping to get out of this.  I’ll let you know when his story is published so that you can find a copy of the LA Times and read it if you so desire. And now, without further ado, here’s John… Continue reading

I knew there was something special about this place!

Grocery stores

This is just a quicky about grocery stores.  I had mentioned that the Pioneer Store is probably the closest to us, but it’s not big enough to have all the things we need so we never go there.  We’ve been going to Piggly Wiggly.  I hadn’t been in one of those since I was growing up in Vancouver, WA.  That and Shopko (which is more a department store than a grocery store) have been our stores in Sister Bay since we’ve been here.  When we’re down in Sturgeon Bay we go to Walmart. From Door County, WI

This afternoon we left Green Bay, WI and headed northeast up the peninsula that divides Green Bay (the actual bay) and Lake Michigan.  Part way up the peninsula we entered Door County, a place we’ve been told is very popular, very beautiful, and has lots of things to see and do. Continue reading

From De Pere, WI

I’ve been remiss in writing since we left Minneapolis last week.  When we first got to De Pere (just south west of Green Bay, WI) we had a couple deadlines hanging over our heads, and when we managed to get those done, there didn’t seem to be much to write about. Continue reading

Home improvement

I hadn’t realized it’s been a week since I last blogged, but there didn’t seem to be much to blog about.  Looking back over the week I realized we have actually done a fair amount this week.  I’ve been working on learning how to operate some software and hardware for our business, but more importantly, some improvements have been made to our RV. Continue reading
