It’s the story of our lives lately: Once we were parked at our campsite here in Meredith, NH, we drove half an hour south to try to see the Canterbury Shaker Village and it was closed. We had missed it by nine days. I was taking pictures from the street until I met an employee who gave us permission to walk around the grounds. We couldn’t go into the houses, but I tried taking some pictures through the windows. This day is dedicated to my sister, Sherill, who first told me about the Shakers back in the late 1970’s. Palmyra, NY
This is the part of the trip Mark has been looking forward to. We have been working chronologically backward through his church history. A couple years ago we visited Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Last Spring we visited Nauvoo, IL where Joseph Smith was killed. Today we visited Palmyra, NY where Joseph Smith reportedly had his vision and received the golden plates. Continue reading
Touring Door County: Washington Island
So far we have done all our Door County exploration on the peninsula, but there is an island off the tip of the peninsula that is part of Door County as well. On Wednesday we took the ferry there and spent the day exploring the island. It took me all that evening to download, edit and export the pictures we had taken, so today I can finally write about it. Continue reading
Happy Father’s Day!
I tried to call my father this afternoon to wish him a Happy Father’s Day but ended up having to leave a message on his answering machine. Even better than that, Jamey left a Happy Father’s Day message on our answering machine for Mark. I hope Dad gets as much pleasure from my message as Mark got from Jamey’s! Continue reading
The church of The Old Rugged Cross
When Mark and I were researching churches in the area we found that there are not many in this tip of the peninsula, but Sturgeon Bay has both an LDS church and a Friends church. They both meet at 10:00 on Sunday morning, so since we’d been to Mark’s church last week, we went to the Friends Community Church this morning. Continue reading
From De Pere, WI
I’ve been remiss in writing since we left Minneapolis last week. When we first got to De Pere (just south west of Green Bay, WI) we had a couple deadlines hanging over our heads, and when we managed to get those done, there didn’t seem to be much to write about. Continue reading
Nauvoo, IL
OK, so here is a little LDS history: Joseph Smith first brought his followers to a swampy bend in the Mississippi River and named the area Nauvoo, a Hebrew word meaning “the beautiful location”. They drained the swamp and began building a well planned town, the second largest in the west at the time. Chicago was the largest. Continue reading
Progress made
For the most part today, Mark and I stayed home and worked on various projects. A couple things happened to make this a good day. Continue reading
A Dickens Christmas
It was Christmas Eve and Bob Cratchett sat huddled over a candle flame trying to warm his hands. Scrooge heard his lack of work, counting money and writing figures, and told him to get back to work. Bob said, “Please, Sir, may I take off a little early tonight? It is Christmas Eve, after all.” Continue reading
From Canton, TX
Mark has told me that when he was a long-haul trucker, he never made it through Austin without going through stop-and-go traffic. There was even a time when it took him three hours to get through Austin. This being Sunday, we decided to get up early and try to get through Austin before noon. Continue reading
