From Middletown, RI

This morning’s drive was our shortest yet.  It took us just under an hour to get from Middleborough, MA to Middletown, RI!  We plan on staying here for two nights so I can research some of my family history.  By the way, before we left our campsite this morning, we found out that the weather we experienced yesterday was only a very mild nor’easter.  I’d hate to see a normal one! From Middleborough, MA

Today we touched on three states: Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.  The weather was extremely wet and windy, but we intrepid travelers managed to get some sightseeing in before dark.  I must say, though, that I’ve noticed in the last several days that the sky seems to start darkening around 3:00 in the afternoon.  It may not be completely dark till 5:00, but it does make for some rather dismal pictures. From Biddeford, ME

Sometimes dreams really do come true!  When I was in high school, a friend of mine and I got our hands on a road atlas and began dreaming about taking a trip around the country.  One place I desperately wanted go was Portland, Maine so that I could say I’d been to Portland’s on both sides of the country.  Today I fulfilled that dream, in a manner of speaking.  But my sister, Sherill, had also advised me on other places in Maine to see.  We sort of got to do that. From Meredith, NH

It’s the story of our lives lately: Once we were parked at our campsite here in Meredith, NH, we drove half an hour south to try to see the Canterbury Shaker Village and it was closed. We had missed it by nine days.  I was taking pictures from the street until I met an employee who gave us permission to walk around the grounds.  We couldn’t go into the houses, but I tried taking some pictures through the windows.  This day is dedicated to my sister, Sherill, who first told me about the Shakers back in the late 1970’s. From Shelburne, VT

We left Old Forge, NY this morning and continued eastward through the Adirondack Mountains.  The further in we got, the prettier the scenery.  As soon as we hit I-87, our GPS sent us north on it.  I said, “Really?  I was expecting to keep heading east on 8.”  Mark was just happy to be on a highway again, but when I found out that the GPS was going to send us ninety miles out of the way, I asked Mark to turn off at the next exit.  He was skeptical, but he made the turn.  As soon as he did, our ETA went from sometime after 4:00 to sometime before 3:00, and the roads weren’t as bad as he had expected.  I just didn’t want to waste the gas to go almost up to the Quebec border and then have to come back down the other side to a place not far from us! Palmyra, NY

This is the part of the trip Mark has been looking forward to.  We have been working chronologically backward through his church history.  A couple years ago we visited Temple Square in Salt Lake City.  Last Spring we visited Nauvoo, IL where Joseph Smith was killed.  Today we visited Palmyra, NY where Joseph Smith reportedly had his vision and received the golden plates. Back from Minett, Ontario, Canada

We drove into Canada yesterday and lost touch with the rest of North America.  Our GPS didn’t work, nor did our cell phone or our hot spot, so I have a couple days worth to report tonight.  I’m warning you this might be long because we saw a lot!

MCC and Gettysburg

This morning Mark and I headed to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) where Sue was going to show us around.  On our way, we noticed that many on the homes had clothes hanging on clotheslines.  Apparently, Mondays are wash days. Continue reading →
