Happy Valentines Day!

I have always thought it would be romantic to take a horse-drawn carriage ride, and apparently a number of other people thought so too.  Mark and I made a dress-up date for tonight to go into San Antonio and take a horse-drawn carriage tour of the city.  Traffic was congested and we waited in line for nearly two hours, but we finally got our romantic ride in a Cinderella carriage!  Here are some pictures from this evening: Continue reading

Starting the New Year out with new things

When my nephew, Nate, was young, my sister Lauryn decided to do the gift giving on New Years Eve so that the family could focus on Christ’s birth on Christmas.  She figured it would be appropriate to start the New Year with new things, so the biggest family party of the year has ever since been New Years Eve with Lauryn as the hostess extraordinaire.  The food was always fantastic, but the biggest event was the gift exchange, especially the white elephant exchange.  Her parties were always the highlight of the year. Done, except for the pay!

This morning I was sitting at the table checking e-mails while Mark went to the VA for a fasting blood draw.  All the blinds were closed.  As I was sitting here I became aware that the chain link fence next to the RV was rattling, so I opened the blinds to see what was happening.  What was happening was that the fence company was taking the fence away.  I called our boss and he said he was aware of that and they would be bringing a trailer out this afternoon to pick up everything that belongs to Holiday Hills Christmas Trees.  Continue reading

A Dickens Christmas

It was Christmas Eve and Bob Cratchett sat huddled over a candle flame trying to warm his hands.  Scrooge heard his lack of work, counting money and writing figures, and told him to get back to work.  Bob said, “Please, Sir, may I take off a little early tonight?  It is Christmas Eve, after all.” Continue reading

Recognizing Christ

Today was bitterly cold with heavy winds that blew through our tent.  Our boss told us to mark all our trees and wreaths at half price, and even at that people tried to get us to let them have a tree for less!  At some point today a couple walked in.  The man was blind in one eye and they both looked hard up.  The first thing the man said to me was, “We’ve had a bad year.  We’re hoping you have a small tree.”  I showed them our only table top tree which is flocked, and at half price it was $25, but that was obviously too much for them and they left, looking rather dejected.  Continue reading

It’s beginning to look less like Christmas…

It was in the mid-70’s today.  Mark and I have let our employees go with a handshake and their final pay.  There are so few customers coming in now that we can handle it ourselves.  We’re down to our last thirty one Christmas trees as of tonight, and we spent a lot of today beginning the tear down process while remaining open for business.  We are so-ooo looking forward to this job ending!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to all my readers!  I was looking forward to having a day off for Thanksgiving, but it didn’t exactly work out like that.  We had a delivery of trees this morning, so I called in one of our employees.  While he and Mark dealt with the trees and some other set-up stuff, I tried to find a Laundromat that was open.  It’s been over a week since I’ve had time to wash clothes (let alone dishes)! Under the bigtop

Yesterday two big trailers pulled up with all the equipment for setting up our lot.  Mike and Roger and the three amigos worked all day without any kind of a lunch break or dinner break.  I managed to get most of them to take some cans of pop, some jerky and a couple tangerines.  They were here till after dark and got all the basics in for us.  We take it from here.
