The LA Times story by John Glionna

Those of you who have been with me for a while will remember that last summer when we were working in Door County, a reporter named John Glionna and a photographer named Francine Orr came out from the LA Times to tag along with us, interview us, and photograph us.  One thing and another came along and the story was put off.  John just wrote to me to ask if I’d seen the story online. From Elgin, IL

We got a really late start today, plus the fact that we needed to stop for groceries in Sturgeon Bay, so we entered Illinois in the dark.  We got to the campground we were hoping to stay in and at first we saw a closed sign and were afraid we were too late.  Fortunately we found out that only the Burnidge Forest Preserve was closed but the campground was still open.  We were so grateful! Last day on the job

The last campers pulled out (supposedly) by noon today and then it was time to do closing procedures.  The part Mark and I played in it was to bring all the soap and shampoo dispensers and cleaners up to the main building to empty them into bottles so they won’t freeze this winter.  Then we washed the dispensers out and put all the used rags through the washer and drier.  We emptied the garbages, turned off the heat and locked the doors.  What a joy to be done for this season! Final weekend in Door County

I was sick for a week with the “company cold” (the staff has been passing it around), and this week Mark got it.  We’ve been working on trying to get packed up to leave and campers keep coming and won’t be leaving till the day before we do, so things have been busy.  Still, I’ve taken some time the last couple days to do some fun things while Mark had to stay home nursing his cold. Camping World is here

Camping World has come to Wagon Trail Campground for several days.  We had forgotten this was happening and this evening Mark and I were in our RV when we started hearing voices.  Then we heard music and I said to Mark, “It sounds like there’s a television on near us.”  We finally realized it was the evening of entertainment on Camping World’s agenda, so I took my camera and headed up to check it out. Fritz-o-rama

With apologies to my readers back home, I’m going to post a bunch of pictures of people you don’t know!  This is because today there was a potluck of staff and seasonals and included was a retirement party for a man who hasn’t worked here most of the summer.  He had camped and worked here for many years and started the summer with us, but for various reasons he had to retire before the summer even started.  Many people here love Fritz so this was his official send-off.  Several of those people will be reading this blog, so this one’s for them!  (Those of you back home are welcome to read it too, though!)  And without further ado, here are the pictures: Continue reading

We’re not the only ones who work around here!

I thought I should tell a little bit about what the others do around here since the season is winding down.  Actually it isn’t going to feel much like it’s winding down this weekend because we have sixty three campers checking in for Labor Day weekend today. Continue reading
