To Arkansas and back

First, I’d like to share something my dad told me after my last post.  He said that a nest of squirrels is called a drey.  If you spell dray with an a, it’s a horse-drawn carriage.  Also, contrary to reports you have apparently been hearing back west, our weather today was in the 80’s and muggy, not snowy.  We are, however, expecting a lot of rain and wind to hit tomorrow with possible thunderstorms. First Azalea Festival weekend

Marval doesn’t expect as many campers in April, so they lumped three weeks under the theme of the Azalea Festival — which isn’t even here in the park, or as far as I can see, in Gore.  They say it’s a local fesival, so I’ll have to see if I can get to it sometime this month.  I think most of the folks here this weekend were here for other reasons. Another state under my belt

Yesterday (Tuesday) was the start of our weekend and for once we didn’t have any appointments scheduled in Muskogee, so we decided to go east instead.  Mark has been looking for a part to connect an auxilary propane tank to our RV so we don’t have to drive up to get propane in our tank every time we run out.  It was suggested that we might find the part at a place called Graingers in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Great balls of fire!

As I write, we are directly in a lightning storm.  I mean, there’s no counting 1-1000, 2-1000… for this one.  The whole area around us turns as bright as day for a few seconds and then there’s a crack and a rumble that rattles the floor beneath us.  It keeps going every five seconds or so.  Rain is pounding down on top of us.  I’ve never seen anything like this! Gore: the trout fishing capital of Oklahoma

Gore is such a small town that I think it mainly survives because of the folks Marval Resort brings in.  Being right on the river, Marval caters to a lot of fishermen.  The city stocks the river with trout and Marval has special events for the fishermen who come.  All of this relies on the water in the river.  Continue reading

After the dust has settled from spring break

Yesterday, the last day of spring break here, it snowed!  It was just itty bitty flakes that didn’t even stick, but everyone commented on it.  This morning Mark and I woke up and our water wasn’t running.  We had to use our water pump for water most of the day.  It was frigid most of the day, but late in the afternoon it seemed to just be cold. Continue reading

Go fly a kite!

Yesterday was kite day.  Mark and I had found a bunch of kite kits at the Dollar Tree in Muskogee so we bought them out.  Yesterday morning we sold the kites and Mark helped the kids put them together.  Then yesterday afternoon they took their kites out to the big open field and flew them.  Everyone who got their kite up in the air got a prize.  A fun time was had by all!
