Yes, you read that right! We’re in Valdez: famous for the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989 and the Valdez earthquake of 1964. We had intended to go to church this morning, but it was canceled, apparently due to lack of interest. That meant we were able to make an earlier start than we had anticipated. We left Tok at 1:00 and arrived in Valdez around 7:00, having made a stop in Glennallen for dinner at 4:00. I’ll tell more about what we’re doing here tomorrow, but for now I have pictures to share: Continue reading

The Arctic Circle!
This morning Mark told me he didn’t sleep most of the night because of dogs barking in somebody’s back yard. I woke up with a swollen eyelid because something bit me during the night. Before I even got out of bed I was on my laptop looking for another place to spend tonight. We grabbed all our stuff and were out of the tree house before anyone else was out of bed apparently. We may not be able to get our money back for tonight at that hostel, but it’s worth it to be in a motel tonight! Continue reading
Hostelling
When I was in my early 20s I spent a night in a youth hostel at Cannon Beach. I was in a dorm room with several other young women and had an enjoyable evening chatting with one young woman who was bicycling across the country. The next day she was going to her ultimate destination – Astoria, OR. It felt heady, exciting, to stay in a hostel and meet interesting people. Continue reading
A quicky
I didn’t get a chance to write about our trip to Fairbanks yesterday. Something really cool happened. As we were driving on a long, lonely stretch of the highway, Mark suddenly slowed down and said, “Look!” At the top of the incline we were climbing, right in the middle of the highway, stood a bull moose. Spottings of males are quite rare, as I’m coming to understand. As we slowly approached, he finally decided to turn and saunter off the highway. What a treat!
Making acquaintences
Last Wednesday Mark had an appointment for a massage by a young woman Rose had told us about. The young woman’s name is Amy and her mother is Kris. Kris runs a B&B near Moon Lake, about fifteen miles west of Tok. Mark had a wonderful massage and said that I would get one as soon as I am well. Continue reading

Summer solstice
Yesterday and today are both the longest days of the year in Tok, Alaska. Sunrise was at 3:19am and sunset will be 11:45pm. Don’t let that fool you though. There is a period called Civil Twilight. That’s the period before the sun rises or sets when it’s still light out. It has been light all the time between sunrise and sunset. When we get up in the middle of the night we don’t have to flip any lights on to see. Continue reading

Back to Fairbanks
Last week I tried asking Rose and Mike if there were any hairdressers in Tok who cut women’s hair. My bangs were beginning to hang in my eyes and bug me. Talking about it between themselves, they finally said, “Well, there’s the dog groomer who also cuts people’s hair!” We decided it was time for another trip to the big city! Continue reading
