A promise kept
When we first arrived in Gore eight months ago, we tried out Emily’s Tea Room and I wrote about it. When I mentioned that it was done all in peacock décor, a friend of mine who has a peacock wrote and asked if I could get pictures of it next time I went. I promised I would, and I made good on my promise today. 🙂 Continue reading
Seeing a country dentist
I had an infection in my gums, so I mentioned it to my doctor while I was seeing him about something else. He put me on an antibiotic but suggested I see a dentist, so one week later I was sitting in a dentist’s chair. Continue reading
The beginning of the end
This weekend begins the five weeks of the Trail of Terror that mark our last five weeks in Oklahoma. Last night all the Workampers walked through the trail to see what it will look like in the dark. Mark and I were instructed on what to do in the upside down room to which we’ve been assigned. Continue reading
The farming news
I need to amend a couple things I’ve written previously. First of all, when I said that maybe only the first mowing is good for making hay bales, I was wrong. Now that summer is almost over, the last mowing has been turned into hay bales around us as well. Continue reading
Amish with outside influences
Mark and I were in Muskogee for a couple of appointments this morning, which ended at lunch time. I have noticed a big bill board for an Amish restaurant in the area, so we decided to try it. The food was excellent, but the atmosphere was decidedly not Amish. Continue reading
Things I’ve learned in Oklahoma, Part 2
A prize to Capi Reed from Reedwood Friends Church. She responded to my last post asking if the sound we’ve been hearing that the locals identified as being crickets could actually be cicadas. I went to YouTube and found what a cicada sounds like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mah26og11ms. Sure enough; that’s it! Oklahomans should be ashamed that a Portlander did better than them, and from only a verbal description! Continue reading
Things I’ve learned in Oklahoma
There are so many things about Oklahoma that make it a whole different culture from what I’m used to. This city girl has learned a lot about living in the country. I was just reminded of it again as I was sitting here at the Laundromat watching a man ride by the post office across the street on his horse. Continue reading
Our anniversary
Today was Mark’s and my fifth wedding anniversary. Yep, five years ago we eloped with a Quaker minister and two LDS missionaries for our witnesses. It’s been the best five years (plus the two we knew each other before we got married) of my life! 🙂 Continue reading
Cherokee Nation
This morning Mark and I led Clyde and Kathy to the VA in Muskogee. We left early so we could go to the Five Civilized Tribes Museum. I mentioned yesterday that Clyde has Cherokee blood, but I forgot that Kathy has Native American blood as well. I think her grandmother was Shawnee. Continue reading
