You may have thought to ask yourself today, “How does Tok celebrate the 4th of July?” Let me tell you, there are no fireworks. For one thing it would be a fire hazard, and for another, it never gets dark enough at this time of year to see them. We did hear a few gun shots this evening, but the big event was the parade at 11:00 this morning. They shut down our stretch of the Alaskan Highway for it. Here are some pictures I took today as it went past our office: Continue reading

Memorial Day
We had plans to drive to Fairbanks today and see what that’s like. We both needed better work shoes and there’s no place in Tok to get good ones. On our way, we stopped at North Pole, Alaska! Yes, Virginia, there really is a Santa Claus! Here are some pictures: Continue reading
Thanksgiving and dancing for joy!
I just realized I haven’t written in nearly a week. It’s not that I haven’t had things to write about, but I’ve been busy experiencing things to write about. Continue reading
Happy New Year!
My extended family traditionally celebrates the gift giving part of Christmas on New Years Eve. This tradition was started when my nephew was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. My younger sister wanted him to associate Christmas with Christ’s birth, but decided he could start the New Year out with new things. Hence, the gift giving on New Years Eve. Continue reading
Happy Boxing Day!
I trust you all had a good Christmas. We had a quiet Christmas with my mother and older sister and their husbands. Mark and I opened our gifts and we called my son and sang “O Come, All Ye Faithful” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. This tradition started when he was young and would sleep in on Christmas morning. His dad and I would stand outside his door like carolers and sing him awake. I still call him first thing on Christmas morning and sing him awake! Continue reading
Christmas Eve, from Milwaukie, OR
Merry Christmas, everyone! We had a wonderful visit with my younger sister’s family in Klamath Falls, OR. They showed us Rob’s and Nate’s school and the little theater where their family all performed in It’s a Wonderful Life. Then my sister took us to the Dollar Tree so Mark and I could do our traditional $10 hunt for gifts for each other. We don’t need much and we have fun hiding from each other in the aisles where we’re picking up little things so we have something to open from each other on Christmas. We ended the day along with Lauryn and Rob watching the original black and white version of A Christmas Carol. Continue reading
Second Sunday of Advent
This morning we were out of propane in our external tank (it seems to go faster in the cold weather) and our hot water pipes were frozen. Our water tank which can be used with a water pump was a fifty gallon block of ice. I ended up walking across the snow to get to the bath house across the street to take a shower for church. Jamey sent me a link I thought others might find interesting: http://www.professorfootnote.com/. It’s an annotated discussion of how Christmas developed in America. The Puritans banned Christmas because of their experience of it in England. So how did Christmas come to … Continue reading
