From Hardin, MT

Going through Montana today reminded me of the train trip Mom and I took from Portland to Wisconsin several years ago. We were in a sleeper car, and a woman in the next room to us came to our door as we were crossing Montana and said, “Are we ever going to get out of Montana?” It seems to go on and on forever!

The campground we woke up in this morning
Our first clue that we would be climbing again today
We needed to get supplies at Walmart in Butte, but we’ve never seen a parking lot so full that we couldn’t find a place to park our RV before.
These rows and rows of shopping carts were not the only groups of carts in the parking lot. The store was huge. I used the restroom while Mark started shopping, and when I got out, I called him to find out where he was. He said he was in the grocery section and I couldn’t even see far enough to tell what direction that was!

Looking down into the valley
Mark pulled off to check the transmission fluid. It was still good. He said that climbing the mountains in this RV is easier than in our old RV.
Coming down; we crossed the continental divide!
Boulders
More of the Rockies
Still snowy
What a view!
Starting to look a little drier
We stopped at a rest stop that had a dog yard with a fire hydrant in the middle of it. Mark and I remembered being here a number of years ago and thinking that the fire hydrant was cute.
There was another dog fountain outside the dog yard and Tucson lapped it up!
A mill wheel
Farm country
Billings, MT out Mark’s side window
I like to put my feet up on the dashboard as we’re driving down the road!
Tucson got bored and wanted to play with Mark while he was driving, but at least she got some petting out of it!
This is white sand. I saw a fair amount of it as we were riding east of Billings and I wondered how they could grow anything here.
Water!
Grandview Campground in Hardin, MT; our stopping point for tonight.

This morning when I was looking for a place to reserve a spot for tonight in Hardin, I read a review on this place that said it was nice and “much” cheaper than the KOA down the road. Based on that review alone, I made a reservation to stay here. Bad mistake! We’re here now, but I got to comparing the prices at KOA and they were only a couple of dollars more and probably much nicer than this place. When I walked into the office, it smelled like an outhouse. There was a little gift store in front of the desk, but behind the desk was total chaos. Piles of stuff everywhere and thick cobwebs. We are parked right next to a building and our site isn’t level. We are listing a little toward the driver’s side.

Oops! I forgot to press the publish button last night because Mark and I started making reservations for the rest of our trip. I forgot to mention that the temperature was in the upper 70s.
