Stations of the Cross

Several people from my church gathered this afternoon (in 99 F heat) to go to the Degrazia Gallery. Degrazia was an American painter who studied under Diego Rivera. In 1963, he did a series of paintings of the Stations of the Cross that are only brought out during Lent. We weren’t allowed to take pictures of the artwork, but I got photos of some of the other things around the grounds.

The last of the wild Mohicans! These are some of the children who came. The first 2 and the one hidden behind the tree are several of my pastor’s sons. I don’t remember the girl’s name.
This is Pastor Adam Kemper looking at the coi pond in the garden.

I heard something tinkling in the breeze and found this wind chime
Green!
This is the mission that Degrazia built.
Inside the chapel: Adam in the foreground, 2 of his boys at the window with his wife, Allie, and Becca under the open ceiling. The children found a lizard in the window.
This angry-looking fellow enchanted the children, but Adam warned them not to try to touch him because these kinds of lizards bite. He spoke from experience!
The mission was struck by lightning, which burned the walls. Unfortunately, they had to cover the black up with paint so that Degrazia’s drawings were covered up.
A photo of what the chapel looked like before the walls were burned. This is the same wall pictured above.
This fireplace was in Degrazia’s home, which we toured as well.
A poet in our church, named Julie Johnson, said this would be her writing room if she lived in this house.

After the tour, Mark and I headed for Dairy Queen for something cold!

Tomorrow is Palm Sunday. My pastor has asked me to share my testimony during his sermon. If you’d be interested in seeing it, you can either watch it live starting around 11:00 AM Pacific Time at https://tucsonfriends.online.church/ or watch the recording at any time after that: https://www.youtube.com/@tucsonfriends/streams. It’s a Palm Sunday service like you’ve never seen before!

  1. Thanks, Denise, for sharing your story at your church and making it available to us across the country to hear! God is definitely a God of new creation and redeemed horizons! Blessings as you continue to minister in informal and more formal ways to others! Happy Easter!! (in a few days, but also every day)
