Neil Gaiman gave his words of wisdom to the University of the Arts class of 2012. The words are relevant to anyone doing creative work, and so I share them here with you. (Just click on Neil’s name above.) The vimeo is 19:55 minutes long, but well worth the inspiration he’ll bestow on you.
What I walked away with is this bit of advice for freelancers:
- Do good work
- Be pleasant
- Be on time
He said that if you can only manage two out of the three, that’s OK. If you do good work and you’re on time, people won’t be as put off if you’re unpleasant. Or if you are likeable and you do good work, people may forgive you for not being on time. My aim, however, is to be able to accomplish all three with any manuscript I get.
The link I’m attaching to Neil’s name also includes a cartoon Gavin Aung Than of Zen Pencils did of part of his speech, but watch his speech to get a better understanding of the comic.
I liked his advice… “Do Good Art”!!
