The Longest Day – coming soon!

Several months ago, I wrote about joining The Longest Day fundraiser to help fight Alzheimer’s. “The Longest Day is the day with the most light — the summer solstice. On June 20, thousands of participants from across the world come together to fight the darkness of Alzheimer’s through an activity of their choice. Together, they use their creativity and passion to raise funds and awareness for the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.”* Here is what I’ll be doing to honor a woman named Wanda and my Aunt Marg who are both suffering from dementia…

I heard about Wanda through a mutual friend. Wanda had been an avid seamstress and crafter until she started forgetting how to sew. My friend took me to Wanda’s house, at Wanda’s invitation, to take as much of her sewing supplies as I wanted. I brought home bins and large garbage bags full of fabric and other things, and among them, I had gotten about one hundred T-shirt pictures. These were the pictures Wanda had cut out of the fronts of T-shirts for some kind of project she never completed. As I was going through them, I started sorting them into twelve groups for each month of the year.

Top row: January, February, March
2nd row: April, May, June
3rd row: July, August, September
Bottom row: October, November, December

It occurred to me that I could make them into kits and call them Wanda’s Journey after the woman I got the T-shirts from. The pictures above are my sample of what I did with them, making them into scenes with campers. Not all the pictures are the same. Here’s the theme for each month:

  • January – Snow
  • February – Birchwoods
  • March – St Patrick’s Day
  • April – Early blooming flowers
  • May – Birds
  • June – Children
  • July – Night sky
  • August – Summer vacation
  • September – Harvest
  • October – Pumpkins, gourds, jugs
  • November – Animals looking at the moon
  • December – Christmas

So, here’s my plan… If you go to my page (https://act.alz.org/site/TR?pg=personal&px=19088267&fr_id=14244) and donate $50 to the Alzheimer’s Association, I will make you the month block of your choice (perhaps in honor of a birthday or anniversary). If you donate $200 or more, I will make you a whole quilt of the blocks. My goal is to raise at least $1600 for the Alzheimer’s Association and so far I’ve raised $170 so I’m a tenth of the way there! Donate on my page and then send me a request for what you’d like to receive. Get your order in early because I will try to have them finished by June 20th and sent to you on the 21st. (Quilts may have to be sent later.)
